Gustav III

Gustav III was Sweden's first prince to be born on home soil for more than half a century. He regained royal power through a coup d'état. He saw himself as an enlightened despot who promoted culture and science, and he reformed the state. Criticism against him grew. On 16 March 1792, he was shot during a masked ball at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.

Queen Sofia Magdalena and Gustav III became engaged when they were just five years old, and were married 15 years later. The queen's husband was shot, and her son Gustav IV Adolf was deposed.
