Oskar II ascended to the throne following the death of his brother, Karl XV. During Oskar's reign, Sweden underwent sweeping changes following demands for reform. The union with Norway grew weaker, and was eventually dissolved.

Sofia was Queen of Sweden, and until 1905 also of Norway. She was a philanthropist, and nursing education in Sweden was modernised thanks to her efforts.
